Man and child smiling in a brightly lit city street at night. Below, a cake with cookie topping and the text "Happy Birthday Wizuri!"

I don’t know how many more days, months, or years I have left to live. The doctor says, I’m in excellent shape, but life is unpredictable. I am writing this letter to you for your 15th birthday, in case death comes sooner than expected.

Sure, I could have shared these words with you in a private setting. However, much of your time is spent online and on screens these days.

I want to see more of you around the house, but you can read this letter in your favorite place at home- your bedroom. Hopefully, this letter will resonate with you like the previous ones have and affirm my love for you throughout the year.

Did you enjoy your special day? We wanted to do more to celebrate you. But you know, we are sticking to a tighter budget through this season.

Things are getting better.

One year ago, today, we returned to the States. You weren’t happy. Watch our last Vlog episode in Antigua for evidence;)

After we arrived in our new cold city, we spent our first few nights in an Airbnb. You had a bedroom to yourself across the hall from the boys with a separate space heater. It was a nice temporary home.

Thankfully, we found a place to rent within a week. A month later, you started school, and I began work. You joined a swim team. Everything happened fast.

Through all these changes, you’re maturing. It’s a blessing to see you grow into a kind and responsible young lady. I see how you respond to your brothers with a smile and so much patience.

Thank you for not crashing out!
I’m sure the boys in school are interested in you.

Let them look, but remember that relationships can wait. It’s important to focus on your academic studies and sports activities. I’m not trying to control your desire to date; I simply hope you remain clear on your priorities.

In high school, relationships are like TikTok trends. They’re brief, often silly, and seem important in the moment. When the time comes, you can explore the experience of romantic love.

Finding a life partner, as I have with your mother, is a blessing. We created you and your brothers. Try not to think about how; it might make you vomit.

When it comes to marriage, you want someone who appreciates your entire self—your mind, your character, and your values. They should complement you and not take anything away. These are deep concepts, but when you’re ready for dating advice, I’ll be here for you.

Every day I write your name in my journal. You are among the people whom I am grateful for in life. As you get older, always make time for gratitude.

By developing a gratitude practice, you can experience the light of joy on the darkest days.

Continue to do your best in school, value self-discipline, surround yourself with positive peers, be true to yourself, trust in God, and know that your mother and I love you. In addition to the cake and gifts, I hope this 6 or 7, 6 …7, minute read lets you know how special you are to me.

Happy Birthday Zu Zu!

I love you,

Dad

P.S. Share this letter with your friends. Maybe they will subscribe and read next year's letter:)
